Transcript Partial transcript
Machine transcription of the meeting recording. The words are the recognizer's, except where a passage is marked as corrected or machine re-recognized; most have
not been checked against the audio, so words, numbers and names can be misheard.
It describes what was said. It cannot establish who voted how, an amount or an outcome — the City's
minutes do that (above).
A time links to its passage, and “Copy link” copies that link. No recording can be started from here.
172 suspect passage(s) marked in place; insufficient transcript coverage: most of the recognized text is suspect; inspection incomplete: language review; 1 stretch(es) where a voice was detected and no words were recognized.
How this transcript was made. New machine transcription of the whole recording, with 9 voices separated from the audio.
15 short machine repair(s) (19 word(s)) are labelled in place, with the original words beside them: an ordinary word was replaced only where two further machine readings agreed on a different one.
Checks run on this transcript: the recognizer's own warning signs and whether a voice was detected where the words are. Not completed: language review.
A second, independent machine reading was compared with it word by word: the same words for 61.2% of 10,530 content words.
Dotted words (140 places) are ordinary wording differences: hover or tap to see the other reading.
172 passages (53% of the words) are marked suspect: their words are not shown ("unclear audio") and support no statement: numbers, amounts, negation or names differ; the language review questioned them; or no voice was detected there.
Agreement between two machine readings is not verification.
Inspection is incomplete: language review.
Voice detected, no words recognized (1 stretch). Something may have been said here that the transcript does not have:
00:30:54 (2 s) — neither reading has words
Speakers were separated by voice. A plain name rests on evidence tied to that voice; “provisional” is a name from an earlier text-only pass and is not verified; “Speaker N” is an unidentified voice.

Meichuan, Alibaba, Wuxi. All for individual reasons. Not because we were making a mass change and wanted to sell all our Chinese holders. They were individual things that went on.

We are absolutely below the index, no doubt. But the first quarter, and so far this year, now we've got almost five months of the year end, we're significantly outperforming the index. And
‸ That growth is actually consensus. If we put in our estimate, it would be higher than that. Because we do our own models. But we're just giving you a consensus estimate to show you what kind of growth is in the portfolio. Okay.

So to your point, Elliot, you're right. They've had a challenging period. In our books, we do show that the first quarter they did outperform. This slide in the presentation just looks at a few more calendar years beyond what we saw on the prior page, page 11. So if you look at the left-hand side, you see for the trailing periods, for the quarter, you have a green there because they outperformed. But then when

We bought them a little bit high, yes. But the reason why we bought them was because they were doing so well, right? Because if you look at the 10 years and since inception, both of those are also green, outperforming. Even with the underperformance that they've suffered recently of the three and five years, that 10-year number and since inception number captures all that performance. It's green. Now if you look on the right-hand side, you see the calendar years for the past five years. 23, 22, 21, 20, and 19. To Jim's point, you'll see that 23, 22, 21 are all red. But

to say that I wouldn't be surprised if they are able to do that again sometime in the future. But we have suffered through three years back-to-back, something that I've never seen them do. It's uncharacteristic. Part of it, Jim explained, was because they got China wrong. And they pulled in their horns a little bit with that. However, how they pick stocks is still consistent. And for the most part, they've been good with that. So

presentation still. There's a lot of information in this presentation. It's hard to get through all of it, but another point that ‸ would, to reinforce what we were just talking about, this is now the performance of the composite. The composite performance is not going to be identical to ours, but it's going to be in the same ballpark, right? So if you look here, you see these are now calendar years prior to what we just saw a moment ago on slide 13.

So apples to apples after fees, how are they doing relative to the benchmark? So for 2015, you notice that they lost about half a percent. The benchmark lost about 80 basis points. So they did better by losing less. 2016, again, they beat the benchmark only by 10
Flag: words were replaced by a machine repair · 00:27:15–00:27:15 · machine repair: words replaced where two further machine readings agreed (not checked by a person)
points, but they beat the benchmark. 2017, there's a whopper. That's what they do sometimes, right? They beat the benchmark 37.4 versus 25. And then 2018 is kind of a push year. Then 2019, 2020, we just saw a moment ago. So these are some of the numbers ‸ that we saw when we hired them. Just to emphasize again, why we hired them hasn't changed. They haven't changed in how they pick stocks. Although they did refine and improve some of the thinking because obviously looking back on it, they can realize that the macro perspective on China was what swayed them to hold on some ‸ holdings a little bit too long. That's why we would feel comfortable thinking that ‸ on a go forward basis, hopefully they're able to hit those triples and home runs again. ‸ Sure.

It happened to be December 2nd. December 2nd happened to be a Saturday. Never good when a company tells you something on a Saturday. Yeah. And they lowered their guidance more than 20% for the year, for 2023. They easily should have known that by December, that they were going to miss by that high. Secondly, four weeks before, they spun off one of their businesses for several billion dollars. Had they given you that guidance four weeks before, they

companies. And hopefully, the companies do well over the longer term. Which is why when he was talking about the characteristics page on page 18, I think some of that was the message kind of got lost. Because
So, if you could all flip to page five for me. I'm sorry, four. And just a quick couple of minutes about the macro economy. If you look in the upper left-hand corner of the page, you notice that both those columns are pretty consistent for the current quarter relative to the previous quarter. The only number that really jumps out at you as being a little bit different is GDP. You notice in the prior quarter, it was about middle three. In the current quarter, it's a little bit less than 2%. Honestly, the biggest number, when you look through and dig through GDP, the reason why it's down is because we imported a lot more goods. So, import, when you calculate GDP, is actually a negative to the GDP rate. The fact that we

In fact, unemployment still is tepid. It was revised up to 3.9%, but still is below 4%. And I believe it's been below 4% for almost a year. So, quite robust still. CPI also is modest. Still kind of staying in that level. If you look at the upper right-hand corner of the page, what that translated into was a very good stock market. So, as you see, the S&P 500, I highlight that because that captures primarily large-cap stocks. For the

We got that all in one quarter. So, it was a very good quarter. Since then, April was a very bad month. April was down a lot. May was a very good month. So, the market pretty much is back to where it was at the end of March. So,

Bottom left-hand corner of the page, just to see how dramatic the growth has been in the equity markets, remember, the columns represent growth, core, and value. The rows represent market capitalization of large cap, mid cap, small cap. You could draw a line straight from the bottom right up to the top left. Everything that was large cap growth did very well. Large beat mid beat small. Growth beat core beat value. So, technology stocks, by and large, are the place that did quite well for the quarter, and also for the trailing year, that story remained true as well. If you could flip to page 7 for me. This is a snapshot of the portfolio over ‸ different trailing periods. And, you know, the takeaway here is that the asset allocation is what's driving this performance. We're not going to be top quartile every single time, but more often than not, we've been doing well. So, for the most recent quarter, we are top quartile at 5.5%. For the trailing fiscal year date, we're at 13.5%, which is kind of in the middle of the pack. You know, I think that's a very robust return, and I know that our assumption rate is almost half of that. Frankly, over the trailing three and five years and ten years, all those returns are solid. Three years, a little bit weaker, but five years, 8.2%, ten years, 7.8%. The ten-year number is also top quartile, five years kind of more middle of the pack. If you look at the upper right-hand corner of the page, asset allocation, roughly when you add up all the pieces that are stock, and then all the pieces that are not stock, you're kind of at about 70-30. So, we do have a little bit more equity exposure, not because we actively decided to do that, but frankly, stocks have just done better than bonds and real estate, which we just talked about. So,
Just to also highlight, if you look down the first column for performance summary, our large cap component, which is the bulk of our assets at 40%, that was kind of in line with the benchmark. Smith cap, also in line with the benchmark. And
So, for the quarter, we made about $1.3 million all in with income and capital gains, and that's why we ended up at $26 million ‸ change. Page 8, as you know, is just that pictorial depiction of the corpus of the fund over that time. The takeaway here is that there has been nice growth, right? Over the course of just over 20 years, 22 years, the portfolio value has increased three times. So, pretty consistent return over the longer term. And again, we've taken out almost $5 million over the course of two decades. So, it's not a smooth ride, but still going into the northeast quadrant. ‸ A couple of takeaways that I've mentioned in the past, but it bears reminding. Remember, when we were living through COVID, when the world shut down, and we saw that dramatic drop in the chart, and I said, if we look back three to five years from now, that down
going to look like a blip, well, you look at it now, that's not that dramatic. The down drop is not dramatic. It's actually the upside that's pretty dramatic with all that fiscal stimulus and monetary stimulus that we had. And
know, that's when all the mortgage problems happened with U.S. housing, it took about five years for the stock market to get back ‸ losses. And with COVID, that took about three months. So, at the end of the day, we don't know what's going to happen on a day-to-day basis, quarter-to-quarter basis, year-to-year basis. But over decades, I can pretty much guarantee you stocks are going to do well, right? So,
And over the long term, as long as you could stand a little bit of volatility, it will help you earn more money. Page nine, asset allocation. Relative to targets, we're pretty close. The
a little bit underweighted is bonds. We have a little bit more cash relative to that. That's not a bad place to be, honestly, because bonds have been very tepid. Cash is returning roughly about 5%. So, it's not a bad trade there. ‸ Page 10 just shows you all of the components. The biggest piece that ‸ has been more of a consistent challenge for us now is actually Poland. Poland
Brandywine. And for the quarter, Brandywine did quite well. And over the longer term, they outperformed both on a five-year as well as since June of 2017. Top quartile beating the benchmark by almost 3% annualized. Poland has struggled a little bit. In fact, if you look at every single period, they are underperforming. Even the 10-year number, but that 10-year number is still in the top third of the universe. The takeaway is that the benchmark has been really tough to beat. And frankly, they got a couple of names wrong. And they are a concentrated manager, which is why they've underperformed. I would say amongst all of our managers, Poland is probably the one that we probably should be looking at a little more carefully. Not to say that we're not looking at it carefully all the time, because we do. You all aren't the only client with Poland. Similar to Hardman-Johnston, Poland is a concentrated growth manager. So they typically have about 20 stocks. They

Similarly, they also potentially can hit triples. We would say we'll probably give them about another year or so to see whether or not that will change. And if it doesn't, then it possibly can warrant us shifting. But for now, we're so comfortable with it. Happy to address any questions about that after I just finish this up. Our

intercontinental, which did underperform for the quarter. But if you look at the trailing three- and five-year numbers, which are single-digit returns. But again, why do we have real estate? For us, real estate is a substitute for fixed income. And for fixed income during that same period, three years lost about 2%, five years up fractionally. And

And you see page five. Before you get up to 2022, everything looks pretty reasonable, right? They have some periods that they underperform and then some periods that they outperform. But then what happened is that 2022, which kind of bled into 2023, all of those quarters, all of a sudden the underperformance for that year and a half or so, then bleeds into all of the trailing numbers. Trailing three years, five years, 10 years. If you didn't have so many back-to-back quarters

Having said that, you can't really pick and choose. At the end of the day, they're supposed to pick stocks that hopefully will continue to do well. That's why I say we would feel comfortable giving them another year or so to see how this story changes. Have they pulled back? Are they maybe selling stocks a little ‸ faster, holding on to stocks that should do well, putting in good stocks? Because it's worked more than it hasn't worked in the past. So that's why

Every day is a coin flip, who knows? But if more often than not we keep- those good performances. Heads assuming it's positive, right? So give them about a year or so. The international market was up about half of that. As Jim had mentioned, unlike the US where we were more growth oriented ‸ for the past several years, outside the US value actually was a little bit stronger. So that's why as consultants, we advocate having some international exposure in order to create a diversified portfolio. Um, but frankly, international as a market hasn't done as well for the past decade. And that's why over time, at least for the clients that I've discussed international markets with, we've kind of pulled back a little bit. ‸ So 10 years ago, I would have had some clients with 15, 20% international exposure, both developed and emerging markets. Now on average, they're about 10%, which I think is fine. Um, at some point when international does better again, we could increase that exposure, but it's been a home focused market for the past decade. US stocks have trounced all the stocks around the world.

almost about a billion dollars. Their portfolio on a NAB basis is roughly about $9 billion on a gross basis. It's about $12 billion. So, you know, doing the math, roughly about 10% of the portfolio is being requested to be redeemed. So that's why they're being thoughtful about

Second by Mr. Madden. Any questions or concerns with these warrants? I did have a question on, on Salem. There was, there was something here mentioned. Um, I know Salem was bought out. Again. But have, have they changed their, uh, money on the table techniques or they stayed the same? I guess that's really Mark's question.
